Toronto, Canada's Largest City
Arrive in Toronto today and travel by shuttle bus from the airport to your hotel. Located in the heart of the city, you are minutes away from some of Toronto's most famous sights. The day is yours to explore the city on your own. Browse the cities unique shops, satisfy your appetite at one of the cities many ethnic restaurants, or enjoy some local entertainment. Day 2 - Toronto Sightseeing and Departure for Jasper
Today embark on a Hop On/Hop Off sightseeing tour of Toronto that makes 20 stops along a 12-mile route through the city's core. Indulge in some of Toronto's gastronomic treats before you embark on your train journey across Canada this evening. Your first-class experience begins with priority check-in at Toronto's Union Station. Once onboard the Canadian, settle in to your first-class accommodations complete with a comfortable sitting room by day that converts to upper and lower berths at night and prepare for your 10:00 pm departure to Jasper. Day 3 - VIA Rail Toronto to Jasper
When you awake this morning, the train is nearing the small town of Gogama, Ontario. Head to the Dining Car for a hot breakfast before exploring the amenities on board the train. First-class passengers have access to all of the lounges on board the train as well as to the Skyline Car featuring an observation dome offering 360-degree views and the Park Car with three different salons and an upper observation deck. Both the Skyline and Park Cars offer impressive views of the passing scenery and are a wonderful location for photo opportunities along your trip so be sure to bring your camera as you explore the train. Day 4 - VIA Rail Toronto to Jasper
When you awake this morning the train will be pulling into Winnipeg, the capitol of Manitoba. Winnipeg was originally the hub of the Canadian fur trade as it was well-positioned at the junction of three important rivers. Today, this area known as The Forks is the downtown location for some of Winnipeg's exclusive restaurants, shopping, and live entertainment. You will have the opportunity to disembark and explore the town for a couple hours before continuing your journey west.
This afternoon cross the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, signaling the mid-point of your rail journey. The first important town you will come across is Melville, named after Charles Melville Hays, President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad Company who died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Spend the day chatting with your fellow travelers and enjoying exclusive access to first-class lounges, dining on superb meals, and delighting in impeccable service. Overnight train. (B, L, D)
Day 5 - Jasper National Park
Awake this morning in Alberta's capitol city of Edmonton, often regarded as the gateway to the north because of its historically prominent location in the fur trade, the Yukon gold rush, and the Alberta oil discoveries. Make the most of your last full day on the train, admiring the passing scenery, mountain towns, towering forests, and tranquil lakes from your private room or from one of the train's observation decks.
Your train is scheduled to pull into Jasper at 1:00 pm. Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, this town is known for its majestic mountain peaks and floating icefields. You'll be met by Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge staff who will escort you to your hotel. A village of cedar chalets overlooking Lac Beauvert, the Fairmont offers luxurious accommodations in a spectacular mountain setting. Day 6 - Jasper, Wildlife at Its Best
Today embark on your Discover Jasper tour. Travel the trails of the early explorers and view the Park's unspoiled grandeur. Your tour begins along the mighty Athabasca Canadian Heritage River where you will learn about David Thompson and the valley ecosystem. Hike above Maligne Canyon with its narrow gorge and limestone walls created by 10,000 years of water erosion and visit a place of mystery and Native legend at Medicine Lake. Keep your camera handy on your adventure to Maligne Lake, the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, because you are sure to see a variety of mountain wildlife! Overnight Jasper Park Lodge.
Day 7 - Jasper to Vancouver
Rediscover some of your favorite sights on your last morning in Jasper, or embark on a short new adventure. Transfer to the train this afternoon, where you will board VIA Rail's Canadian for a 2:30 pm departure toward Vancouver. Late this afternoon, the train passes Mt. Robson and travels into British Columbia. This evening enjoy a sumptuous dinner aboard the train. Take in the stunning views from your table and reflect on your breathtaking rail adventure. Day 8 - Arrival in Vancouver
Arrive in Vancouver, Canada's third largest city, just after 9:30 am. Transfer from the VIA Rail Station to your hotel (included). Spend the day exploring this coastal city. You won't want to miss Vancouver's most popular attractions including Gastown, a 19th century neighborhood with cobbled streets and unique restaurants; Stanley Park and the famed Vancouver Aquarium; the brewery, markets, unique shops, and restaurants on Granville Island; or, the Sunken Gardens in Queen Elizabeth Park, all of which can be seen on your Vancouver Trolley tour. Day 9 - Vancouver
Your Canada rail vacation comes to an end this morning. You may wish to extend your stay in Vancouver to fully explore the city and all of its incredible sights, continue your vacation with a jaunt to Victoria or Whistler, or return to the airport on your own with memories to last a lifetime. (B)
